THEN & NOW

When I was a teen, I wanted to be Jennifer Marlow on WKRP in Cincinnati when I grew up, but was not given the opportunity to go to college to pursue the career as a receptionist. Acting, however, was a closer possibility. Marriage and children being my choice.

I discovered my true career path at 35, after participating in a production of My Fair Lady with the Penobscot Theatre Troupe in Bangor, Maine. My dance partner for the Ascot Gavotte scene was a DJ at WQCB in Brewer, Maine. After a tour of Q 106, I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wanted to talk on the radio ... but I was no Johnny Fever. Nor would I be living in Maine more than another year, so would not be able to enrol in the 2 year program at the New England School of Communications. Plans changed but goals remained. I was able to enrol in college

I recall thinking that the classes other than Radio in my Applied Communication Program (TV, journalisms, desktop publishing & photography) were a waste of time. Boy was I wrong. I eventually morphed into Bailey Quarters after 20 years in radio, using all that I learned at Camosun College where I  started my career at CKMO in Victoria, BC, and was able to continue classes by working part-time as a receptionist at the OK Radio Group (CKXM & CKLQ) After graduation I moved and found work at CISN in Edmonton, AB back when they had live overnights (with a 2 hour request show to boot) and then spent the next 15 years in Medicine Hat, finishing with APD/MD/Afternoon Drive at CJLT.  I retired before 55 (too early) and then recently found myself job searching and decided to pursue my original career choice without any additional schooling.

Just as radio announcers don’t have just one job to do these days, neither does a receptionist. A receptionist does not just receive clients but manage the intake and outflow of information and are responsible for the appearance of the company. I am a walking, talking, billboards for any company I work for. My skills in web design, photography, social media, promotions, communication and organization have not only enhanced my resume but increased my value in a millennial driven market even though I’m a baby boomer. I have recently become the customer service manager for an electricial company in charge of sales, dispatch and growing the client base. All my prior skills gained from my college classes and my radio career, benefit my current company position today.

I’m no Loni Anderson, nor am I Jennifer Marlowe. Jennifer is wise, sophisticated, intelligent, and well-spoken” ~ Wikipedia. I’m working on it.

DAY #14 - Clean your laundry room.

Nope. We got new pedestals for the laundry pair at Christmas and everything got cleaned then, even under, behind, beside & around when we installed them. Besides, Sunday is a day of rest, sort of, as I don’t seem to be able to sit still on do nothing days.

After pancakes made by the 9 yr old granddaughter for everyone, and our Sunday tradition of watching a movie (Tangled) on the iPad in bed, she headed back to her mum’s in town. Then the guys went out to plow the newly fallen snow in the yard and at the skating rink.

For some reason I had the urge to paint. Last year I bought a bread box & potato bin from my friend’s business on Facebook. She even threw in a plate rack for free because the colour matched. The colour was cream. Way too yellow for my taste so I repainted them “cotton” which is the same paint as the trim that I painted over the dark dusty rose trim inside the house. (leftovers) Now I am painting everything I can find if I don’t like it’s colour. All with the help of my trusty sidekick, #PrincessPurrl Well, supervision when she’s not napping.

ADHD pros & cons

For the past 2 days I was SUPPOSED to be mudding & prepping a bedroom to be repainted by yesterday rather than going through 20 years of Tax documents that need to get shredded and reorganizing an office. A new kingsize bed arrives today and I have to move the master bedroom bed into the unrepainted messy spare room. Sooo, the old bed won’t get reset up BUT our bed will & THEN I will tackle prepping and repainting the guest room. I started that project this past Saturday but after washing the walls with TSP and rinsing with clean water (first time ever doing that before repainting walls) my arms & back were exhausted so 2 days in bed slowed me down. We stayed home this winter rather than head south with the rest of the Canadian Snowbirds because my pain specialist put another request in and said they would call in 3 to 6 months, back in MAY!!  Still waiting for call from a back surgeon to set a date. Starting and not finishing projects is a struggle for ADHDers. Or starting one thing then moving on to start another without finishing (or cleaning up) the last project. I’m so thankful my Hunny understands and is not concerned about my slow pace or continuous mess.  Procrastination is a part of ADHD too. Having a partner who hates painting leaves it up to me so any complaints from him would be null and void anyway. It sure would be nice to have a painting partner though. I think it’s fun. Others think it’s work. I think it would be more fun & less lonely if I had company. Anyone want to just come & watch? Lol

Another sleepless night (dam you Insomnia) Sleep is so important to recharge, repair and rest the brain. Better get some shut eye or I won’t be able to keep my eyes open trying to patch nail holes before painting. If I paint. Who knows what project I’ll try to tackle tomorrow. It’s not like it’s a major family holiday or anything.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my American Friends 🦃 🎉🇺🇸
